Abstract

A cross-linkable copolymer of at least one alpha-alkene and at least one non-endocyclic hydrocarbon containing at least 7 carbon atoms, at least two non-conjugated double bonds, and no vinyl group, is made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the presence of a Ziegler-type polymerization catalyst, by maintaining during the reaction the gram molecular concentration of the non-endocyclic hydrocarbon at least 5 times that of the polymerized non-endocyclic hydrocarbon. The non-endocyclic hydrocarbon may be obtained by dimerizing or trimerizing isoprene, butadiene-1,3, or pentadiene-1,3, with a Ziegler-type catalyst and adding the undeactivated mix directly to the polymerization zone. The term " non-endocyclic " compound means a compound that does not contain a bridged ring, i.e. does not contain a ring having a bridge joining nonadjacent carbon atoms and containing one or more methylene groups. The " non-endocyclic " compound may be cyclo-octadiene-1,5, cyclo-dodecatriene-1,5,9, an aliphatic polyunsaturated compound such as octadiene-2,6, or Diels Alder condensation products of isoprene and/or cyclopentadiene, e.g. indene. The copolymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon liquid vehicle. Examplified catalysts are monoethyl aluminium dichloride and VOCl3, and TiCl4 and di-isobutyl aluminium hydride. The alphaolefines may be ethylene, prpylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, heptene-1, or mixtures, e.g. ethylene with propylene and/or butene-1, or a mixture of ethylene and/or alpha-methyl styrene. The copolymers may be vulcanized using conventional sulphur-containing mixes.
