Abstract
1,037,005. Spade handles. SPEAR & JACKSON Ltd. July 19, 1965 [Aug. 21, 1964], No. 34211/64. Heading B4K. A T or D handle for a fork or spade comprises a hand grip 2 and an integrally moulded hollow socket 3 extending normal to the middle of the hand grip which is moulded about the sides and ends of a core 10 of slightly less length than the overall length of the hand grip. As shown in Fig. 1, the handle is moulded from synthetic plastics material, round a tubular metal core 10 which is located in the mould by spigots 11 integral with plugs 12 of the same plastics material fitted in the ends of the tube the spigots being trimmed off after moulding. In a modification the core comprises a length of solid metal, wood or synthetic plastics material, the spigots being formed integrally or by separate dowels provided on end caps. The socket may be pinned, screwed or riveted to the end of a shaft but in a modification one or more inward projections on the socket engage in one or more recesses in the shaft. In another modification an inwardly projecting ring is adapted to engage a circular groove in the shaft. Rotation of the handle on the shaft is prevented by provision on the socket of a mortise, splines, an off-set dowel, a projecting wedge or cross ribs to fit a corresponding tenon, grooves, hole or slots in the shaft.
