Abstract
At least one molar proportion of a cyclic oligomer of formaldehyde is polymerized with one molar proportion of a phenol having the structure <FORM:1036575/C3/1> where X is a halogen or a monovalent group containing no active hydrogen, Y is hydrogen or X, and Z and Z1 are hydrogen, halogen or monovalent radicals and may be the same or different, in the presence of an electrophilic catalyst and no more than a very small amount of water. Trioxane is the preferred oligomer while boron fluoride, its complexes, Friedel-Craft catalysts, elemental iodine, perchloric acid and acetyl perchlorate are preferred catalysts. Specified phenols are 4-fluoro, 4-chloro, 4-bromo- and 4-nitro-phenol, and 2,4-dichloro-or dibromo- or difluoro- or dinitrophenol. The polymerization may take place in bulk or solution, in the presence of chain transfer agents, e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons, alkyl acetates, acid anhydrides and acetals. The polymerization may take place under conditions of shear, and the product freed of catalyst residues and heated in an inert atmosphere to remove terminal hydroxide groups, e.g. with a base. The product may be acylated with a carboxylic acid anhydride.
