Abstract

A cyclic oligomer of formaldehyde is polymerized with a polyformal, i.e. a polymer containing the recurring unit O-CH2-O-R where R is a divalent organic radical derived from a diol by removal of the two hydroxyl groups and R may vary in the units and may be -CH2- providing the polymer contains at least 20% of R groups having at least two adjacent carbon atoms in the chain Troxane (preferred) and tetraoxymethylene are specified cyclic oligomers while specified polyformals are poly-(p-xylylene glycol formal), poly-(ethylene glycol formal), poly-(decamethylene glycol formal), poly-(but-2-ene-1,4-diol formal) and poly-(2,2,4,4-tetramethyl cyclobutane-1,4-diol formal). The polymerization may take place in the presence of an electrophilic catalyst and not more than a very small amount of water, preferably in the presence of a solvent Lewis acid, e.g. boron trifluoride alone or as a complex and ferric chloride are specified catalysts, at 50 DEG to 90 DEG C. under conditions of shear. The copolymer is heated with a weak acid, or with a solution of a base to remove any terminal oxymethylene hydroxide (-OCH2OH) groups. When treated with the base the copolymer may be in solution either in the base itself or in a mixture of water with a water-miscible alcohol or ketone, or an ether preferably under reflux. The copolymer may then be end-group stabilized, e.g. by reaction with a carboxylic acid anhydride.
