Abstract

In anodic oxidation at an anode current density of 0.05 to 0.3 amps/dm3 of an acid solution of an iodate or a solution of elemental iodine in aqueous alkali forming the anolyte employing a lead dioxide anode immersed in the anolyte and a catholyte consisting of an aqueous solution of alkali in which is immersed an alkali-resistant cathode, the cell being maintained at a temperature of from 5 to 50 DEG C., the anolyte and catholyte are separated by a diaphragm of a woven fabric which is resistant to attack by acid and alkali and which has a Frazier Air Porosity Rating of from 0.8 to 1.1 on ft/min. As described the diaphragm is a flat weave fabric of polypropylene or polyvinylchloride which has been shrunk by heat treatment to form 72.5 to 82.5% of its original dimension and is used in a cell for converting iodic acid to per-iodic acid.ALSO:A flat weave fabric of polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride is shrunk by heat treatment to from 72.5 to 82.5% of its original dimension so as to have a Frazier Air Porosity Rating of 0.8 to 1.1 cu. ft/min. The polypropylene fabric is shrunk by calendering at 305 DEG F. and 500 lbs/square inch for 3 minutes while the polyvinyl chloride fabric is shrunk by immersion in water at 80 to 95 DEG C. for from 5 to 30 minutes.
