Abstract

Composite or heterofilaments and heteroyarns are produced by separately metering into a spinneret assembly comprising a cover, housing and spinneret plate at least two synthetic polymers in a viscous liquid state, i.e. either viscous melts or viscous solutions. The polymers allowed to meet and form a liquid interface or interfaces and are forced, after forming the liquid interface or interfaces through a filtering medium contained within the spinneret assembly and are extruded through the orifices in the spinneret plate to form filaments which are subsequently drawn to orient them. The polymers may be metered into the assembly in a molten state and after forming the liquid interface or interfaces, and being forced through the filtering medium contained within the assembly may be extruded to form filaments which are solidified by a transverse blast of air. The liquid interface(s) formed by the polymers within the spinneret assembly and the orifices within the spinneret plate may be arranged to be parallel and in the same vertical plane and the volumetric flow rates of the polymers may be adjusted to produce heterofilaments (composite filaments) in which the polymers are in side-by-side relationship. The interfaces and some or all of the spinneret plate orifices may be otherwise disposed with respect to each other so that some or all of the filaments produced are homofilaments consisting wholly of each of the polymers. The polymers may be polyamides. At least one of the polymers may be polyhexamethylene adipamide. One of the polymers may be an interpolymer of polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyepsilon caprolactam, e.g. in the proportions 80 : 20. At least one of the polymers may contain a delustrant such as titanium dioxide or a coloured pigment. At least one of the polymers when in filamentary form may be an elastomer or a potential elastomer. At least one of the polymers in filamentary form may be potentially adhesive under conditions in which at least one other component in filamentary form is non-adhesive. One component in filamentary form may have a greater shrinkage capacity than the other polymer(s) in filamentary form. When one of the polymer components can be rendered adhesive by heating, the heterofilaments may be used to form non-woven fabrics, the filaments being bonded together at their cross-over points by heating them. The heterofilament may consist of a polyhexamethylene adipamide component and a polyepsilon caprolactam component, the latter being rendered adhesive by heating the filament to temperatures at which the other polymer is still non-adhesive.
