A flat roof comprises a covering 21, which may be preformed or moulded in situ, which bears on a substantially continuous supporting structure 25 and defines therewith communicating air spaces 24 extending over a greater part of the roof area, the air spaces 24 being in communication with the atmosphere through at least one vertically directed channel 22 such that there may be natural exchange of air through the air spaces by convection. When the covering 21 is moulded in situ, the air spaces may be defined by lost shuttering - over which liquid concrete or plaster forming the covering 21 is poured. The channel 22 may be upwardly or downwardly directed from the periphery of the roof, or may be situated where the covering 21 meets vertical masonry.
