Abstract

Transparent colloidal dispersions in oil of Group II metal carbonates may be prepared by heating an emulsion of the metal carbamate, ammonium hydroxide and an oil-soluble anionic emulsifying agent until NH3 and water are evaporated. The metal carbamate may be formed by mixing the metal hydroxide with ammonium carbamate or NH3 and CO2. The NH3 may be in aqueous solution. A volatile hydrocarbon thinner may be added to the emulsion to aid mixing. The oils exemplified are petroleum lubricating oil of viscosity range SAE 5 to SAE 60, hydraulic oils, synthetic hydrocarbon oils, non-hydrocarbon oils such as polyethers and esters, e.g. esters of dibasic acids, fatty oils such as fatty acid glycerides and glycol esters and ester of polyfunctional alcohols. The emulsifying agents may be oil-soluble sulphates, alkyl salicyclic acids and their salts of more than 20 carbon atoms, high mol. weight fatty acids, naphthenic acids, resin acids, e.g. abietic acid in the form of their compounds with metals, and phosphonic acids. The dispersants may be used as free acids or as soaps with metals of Group II, or with NH3. Li, Na or K. The ammonia may be recovered.ALSO:Transparent colloidal dispersions in oil of Group II metal carbonates may be prepared by heating an aqueous emulsion in oil of the metal carbamate, ammonium hydroxide and an oil-soluble anionic emulsifying agent until ammonia and water are evaporated. The NH3 may be in aqueous solution of 10-35%. The metal carbamate may be formed by mixing the metal hydroxide with ammonium carbamate or NH3 and CO2. A volatile hydrocarbon thinner may be added to the emulsion to aid mixing. A number of thinners, oils and emulsifying agents are referred to. The dispersants may be employed as free acids or as soaps with metals of Group II, or with NH3, Li, Na or K. The NH3 may be recovered. Thus a solution of mahogany sulphonate in lubricating oil has an aqueous solution of calcium carbamate emulsified therein, the emulsion being heated to decompose the carbamate to CaCO3 and to evaporate the H2O and NH3. Examples refer to adding lime to an ammonium carbamate emulsion, the premixing of lime, NH3 and CO2 before emulsifying, and passing CO2 into lime and NH3 in oil. Examples also refer to the use of Ca, Ba, Mg, Zn and Cd hydroxides.
