Abstract

1,034,115. Seals. R. L. OLSON. May 8, 1963, No. 18234/63. Heading F2B. In a lip-type seal 13 for use between opposed members 7, 9, Fig. 2, and comprising a body 13 of elastomeric material having an integral sealing lip 15, the body at least in the region of the lip contains unconnected, discrete, gas-filled cells. The seal 13 is bonded in a groove 14 in one, 7, of the members and, in its free state is of the form shown in dotted lines. The material of the seal may be a composition of natural or synthetic rubber, a plasticizer, a vulcanizing agent and a gas liberating agent which by application of heat liberates quantities of gas such as nitrogen and produces a multi-cellular, closed cell, elastomeric body. The seal shown in Figs. 8 and 9 is used for sealing in both directions between members 213 and 2131 movable together into the position shown in Fig. 9 and comprises a gasket 220 having lips 235 and confined, at its central region, between rigid members 240 interconnected by rods 249. The gas-filled cells 220B adjacent the lips 235 are smaller than the cells 220A in the central body portion. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10, a movable shaft 350 is sealed by a seal 320 clamped in a housing 351, 352 and having lips 325 in sealing contact with the shaft. The gas-filled cells are indicated at 320A and 320B.
