Abstract

A composition for use in polyurethane production consists of a mixture of lead octoate and a reaction product of an alkylene oxide with an active hydrogen-containing compound, said mixture containing from 0.5 to 5.0 parts by weight of said reaction product for each part by weight of lead octoate. Preferred alkylene oxide reaction products are those derived from triethanolamine or triisopropanolamine with propylene oxide, block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and reaction products of octyl or nonyl phenol with 2-8 moles of ethylene oxide. The composition may be mixed with a polyhydroxy compound and reacted with an organic polyisocyanate to form a cellular or homogeneous polyurethane. Polyhydroxyl compounds may be polyesters, polyethers, polyesteramides. Conventional polyisocyanates are specified. In Examples (1) diphenylmethane diisocyanate was added to a mixture of oxypropylated trimethylolpropane, tri(b -chloroethyl)phosphate, siloxane block copolymer, FCCl3 and equal parts of lead 2-ethylhexoate and ethoxylated octyl phenol to produce a rigid foam (3) a mixture of equal parts of lead 2-ethylhexoate and ethoxylated octyl phenol was dissolved in propoxylated glycerol and the solution continuously mixed with more propoxylated glycerol, tolylene diisocyanate, triethylene diamine, water and siloxane. A foam resulted.ALSO:A catalytic composition comprises a mixture of lead octoate and a reaction product of an alkylene oxide with an active hydrogen-containing compound, said mixture containing from 0.5 to 5.0 parts by weight of said reaction product for each part by weight of lead octoate. Preferred alkylene oxide reaction products are those derived from triethanolamine or triisopropanolamine with propylene oxide, block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and reaction products of octyl or nonyl phenol with 2-8 moles of ethylene oxide. The composition may be mixed with a polyhydroxy compound and reacted with an organic polyisocyanate to from a cellular or homogeneous polyurethane.
