Abstract

1,033,891. Landing and launching platforms for aircraft. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. June 17, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10281/62. Heading B7G. A vehicle for launching and landing an aircraft 33 comprises a launching beam 6 pivoted at the rear end of a truck chassis and movable from a horizontal to an inclined position by a jack 10. Two pairs of arms 16, 18, pivotally mounted at their lower ends on the chassis support therebetween flexible bands 24, 26 serving as landing cradles. The cradle ends are connected to cables 28 passing over pulleys 31 on the arms and controlled by winches 30. The aircraft 33 is jet-propelled, the jet nozzles being rotatable to deflect the jet, and is radiocontrolled as disclosed in Specification 10283/62 to permit it to be accurately landed on the vehicle. For a landing operation, the beam 6 is in its lower position, Fig. 1, and the winches 30 tightly stretch the cradles 24, 26. The aircraft is brought to a position a little distance above the cradles and is then lowered slowly on to them, the shock being taken by absorbers (Fig. 4, not shown), permitting an inwardly swinging of the arms 16, 18. The winches are operated to pay-out the cables 28 and lower the aircraft towards the beam 6. After the aircraft is supported by the beam through the interposition of launching shoes 38 the cradles are withdrawn and the beam may be raised (Fig. 2, not shown), for a further launching of the aircraft.
