Abstract

[Also in Divisions B8 and E1] A three-stage hydraulic ram A for luffing a crane jib or excavator arm comprises a cylinder 16 provided with a piston 20 secured to a tubular piston rod 22 constituting a cylinder for a piston 24 and is controlled by a distributer G formed in two sections G 1 , G 2 , controlling the flow of fluid between the supply line H and the reservoir line K, the line L leading to the chamber above the pistons 20, 24 and lines M, N extending between the chamber beneath the piston 20 and the section G 2 and between the chamber beneath the piston 24 and the section G 1 respectively. The sections G 1 , G 2 are controlled by three-position hand levers Q, P whereby the movements of the pistons 20, 24 are selectively controllable. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, an auxiliary distributer R, controlled by a simplified main distributer G, is provided. When the lever P is moved to position II, the supply line H is connected to the line L and the line N is connected, in the distributer R to the line R 1 which is connected to the reservoir line K, and the line M is closed by the distributer R so that only the piston 24 moves down. When the piston 24 is fully extended, pressure in the line L 1 raises the piston 50 in the distributer R thereby connecting the line M to the line N and therefore, to the line R, leading to the line K so that the piston 20 is then extended. In the position III, the line L is connected to the reservoir line K and the pressure line H is connected to the line R 1 which communicates with the line N thereby retracting the piston 24. Simultaneously, pressure fluid in the line N passes through a line N 1 to raise the piston 50 which then interconnects the lines M, N, thereby retracting the piston 20. An adjustable relief valve S, Fig. 4 (not shown) is provided in the line L for controlling the retraction of the ram.
