Abstract

A package for preventing corrosion in water systems comprises an anhydrous corrosion-inhibiting compound enclosed within a film of a watersoluble polyvinyl alcohol. The corrosion inhibitor may be Na, K, or Li chromate, K or Li dichromate, or an alkali metal chlorophenate. An alkaline buffer such as Na2CO3, K2CO3, NaHCO3 anhydrous Na metaborate, tetracorate or silicate, or an alkali metal polyphosphate may also be present to give a pH of 8.0.-9.5 when dissolved. The weight ratio of corrosion inhibitor:buffer may be 1-4:1, and of corrosion inhibitor: film 100-500:1. The polyvinyl alcohol may contain 5-15% residual acetate groups and be plasticized with glycerol, ethylene glycol, low molecular wieght polyethylene glycols, or ethanol acetamide or formamide. Air may be enclosed to provide buoyancy. The package may be tubular and of such size as to provide 100-5,000 ppm of corrosion inhibitor and 1-20 ppm of dissolved polyvinyl alcohol in the water. It can be used in the cooling systems of diesel engines, recirculating cooling towers, and air conditioning systems.ALSO:A package for preventing corrosion in water systems comprises an anhydrous corrosion-inhibiting compound enclosed within a film of a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol. The corrosion inhibitor may be Na, K, or Li chromate, K or Li dichromate, or an alkali metal chlorophenate. An alkaline buffer such as Na2CO3, K2CO3, NaHCO3, anhydrous Na metaborate, tetraborate or silicate, or an alkali metal polyphosphate may also be present to give a pH of 8.0-9.5 when dissolved. The weight ratio of corrosion inhibitor: buffer may be 1-4:1, and of corrosion inhibitor: film 100-500:1. The polyvinyl alcohol may contain 5-15% residual acetate groups and be plasticized with glycerol, ethylene glycol, low molecular weight polyethylene glycols, or ethanol acetamide or formamide. Air may be enclosed to provide buoyancy. The package may be tubular and of such size as to provide 100-5000 p.p.m. of corrosion inhibitor and 1-20 p.p.m. of dissolved polyvinyl alcohol in the water. It can be used in the cooling systems of diesel engines, recirculating cooling towers, and air conditioning systems.
