Abstract
A difficulty inflammable, flame-resistant, clear and transparent artificial material comprising by weight 60 to 80 parts of a mixture of 60-80% of cellulose acetate and 40-20% of nitrocellulose with an addition of 40 to 20 parts of one or more plasticizers, is made by kneading the composition in the presence of sufficient solvent to produce a pasty consistency, and then homogenizing in a roller mill whereby the greater properties of the solvent is removed. A preferred composition comprises 65 to 75 parts of a mixture of 65-75% cellulose acetate and 25-35% nitrocellulose with an addition of 35-25 parts of plasticizer. The plasticizer may be an organic phosphoric acid ester, or a mixture of two or more organic esters of phosphoric acid, halogenated esters of phosphoric acid, esters of phthalic acid or a mixture of said compounds. Specified compounds include triphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, trichloro-ethyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, and di-(ethyl-hexyl) phthalate. Organic esters of silicic or boric acid may also be used. The constituents are mixed with the aid of solvents, e.g. diacetin, methyl acetate, acetone, and a mixture of methyl and ethylene glycol acetates. Ultra-violet light absorbers, e.g. 2,21,4,41 - tetramethoxybenzophenone may also be added.
