Abstract

1,032,393. Driving axle construction. RANSOMES SIMS & JEFFERIES Ltd. Sept. 3, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 24513/62. Heading B7D. A driving axle assembly comprises a differential gear casing 2 with lateral extensions 3/4 each carrying on ball or roller bearings 14 a wheel with an apertured wheel disc 18 through which half shaft 12 may be withdrawn, a cover-plate 23 being splined to the half shaft and secured to wheel disc 18 by bolt means which also secure the portion 18 relative to the bearings 14. In the embodiment the bolt means comprise a series of studs 22 passing through the cover-plate 23 and disc 18 and screwed into hub 16 mounted on the bearings 14. Wheel disc 18 is also secured to the hub 16 by a pair of set-screws 19. The track of the axle may be altered by replacing outer section 4 of the lateral extension by one of a different length.
