Abstract
<PICT:1032228/C1/1> A combined filter, acid absorber and dryer comprises a tubular casing with inlet and outlet fittings 39 and containing a bed of loose granular synthetic zeolite, silica gel or activated alumina 30, retained between woven "Monel" (Trade Mark) wire screens 31, and a porous porcelain or moulded zeolite filter block 36 retained in place by spring 37. Additional wire screen 35 may be included, and spring 37 either bears on a perforate support disc 38, shaped to fit an end cavity of block 36 or seats in the end cavity itself (Fig. 1, not shown). The casing may be two shells 27, 28 joined at 29, or a one-piece casing whose ends are spun following filling. The device is used (Fig. 3, not shown), to clean a refrigerant circuit following burn out of a sealed motor-compressor. The device is inserted in the suction line of the new compressor and the system is run for three days, after which the usual permanent dryer on the liquid side is changed and the present device is cut out of the circuit. The cutting out is either actual removal and replacement by a straight tube, or closing of end valves and opening of a by-pass valve (Fig. 4, not shown).
