Abstract

1,236,396. Filtering gases. C. A. NORGREN Ltd. 16 Aug., 1968 [17 Aug., 1967 (2)], Nos. 38004/67 and 38005/67. Heading BIT. A tubular coalescer and microfilter 7, capable of filtering out sub-micronic particles, is protected by a hollow porous pre-filter 9a capable of retaining particles below 25 microns, and collecting means 13 are provided for coalesced liquid, e.g. water or oil. As described, microfilter 7 is made of borosilicate glass fibres and is enclosed in a plastics sock; filter 9a may be of sintered bronze, ceramics or porous plastics, and communicates with inlet 2. In Fig. 1 (not shown) microfilter 7 communicates directly with outlet 3; but as shown, there is interposed a filter pack 19 of activated charcoal silica gel, activated alumina or molecular sieve to remove liquid traces, and an indicator pack 22 of expanded polystyrene impregnated with cobalt chloride or other substance sensitive to the presence of a liquid. A liquid drain 15 may be controlled manually, or by a floatcontrolled valve 16. Fig. 1a (not shown) illustrates a screwed extension (5) for lengthening the housing to take a longer microfilter.
