In a pump or motor for an hydraulic transmission, comprising a relatively rotatable cylinder block and valve plate, a leakage groove communicating with the peripheral wall of the valve plate is constituted by arcuate portions 45, 46 connected by grooves 47, 48, the leakage groove being disposed between the valve plate kidney ports 38, 39 and hydraulic balancing recesses 41 to 44 co-operating with recesses in the cylinder block face. A central recess 49 in the valve plate also communicates with the peripheral wall.
