Abstract

1,031,405. Feeding webs. WEAN ENGINEERING CO. Inc. June 18, 1964 [March 31, 1964], No. 25332/64. Heading B6B. A web such as very thin steel strip is wound from a supply reel provided with a braking motor along a processing path to a take-up reel, the processing path including a tensioning unit comprising deflector rollers 24, 28, Fig. 4 (not shown), and a tension roller 26 mounted for vertical movement on bearings 30, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), carrying racks 32 engaging pinions 34 on a shaft 36. The shaft 36 is connected through a coupling 40 to torsion bar 42. The lowering of the roller 26 under increased web tension thus imparts a turning force to the bar 42 which is opposed by the constant force of an electric motor 52. Rapid variation in tension is taken up by the bar 42, the effective length of which is adjustable by a hand wheel 60. The tension is adjusted by adjusting the torque of the motor 52. There is also provided a selsyn 76 coupled to a tachometer 74, the selsyn output voltage varying with the rotational position of a shaft 80 and the tachometer output voltage varying with the rate of change of the shaft position. The selsyn and tachometer are electrically connected to the motor 10 to change the back-tension torque exerted on the strip.
