Abstract

1305647 Feeding webs WITTON-JAMES Ltd 7 May 1971 [8 May 1970] 22299/70 Heading B8R The tension in a web 6 being unwound from a reel R2 is maintained constant by a tensioning belt 7 which engages the reel R2 and which is driven by a motor Mo at a speed slightly less than the peripheral speed of the reel; the belt 7 passes over a pulley P2 which is movable to vary the tension in the belt under the control of a pneumatic cylinder 19 responsive to variations in web tension as detected by a sensing roller 45 associated with a pneumatically operated monitoring unit M connected to the cylinder 19, and compensating means are provided between the cylinder 19 and the pulley P2 so that the increase in the tension of the belt for a given increase in tension applied by the cylinder increases as the reel diameter decreases. With this arrangement the pressure limits normally required for the control system are effectively narrowed, and constant web tension can be maintained for a given cylinder pressure throughout the life of a reel. As shown, the compensating means comprises a pivoted cam 14 around which a strap 12 connected to the movable pulley P2 is arranged to be wrapped as the cam is rotated by operation of the cylinder 19, the shape of the cam being such as to providethe required tension characteristics. In a seond embodiment the movable pulley is supported eccentrically between a pair of coaxial gear-wheels movable along parallel tracks (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) whilst in a third embodiment the movable pulley is supported by a pivoted arm co-operating with a cam surface of appropriate form (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
