Abstract

1,031,095. Tyre inflation devices. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 24, 1963 [May 11, 1962], No. 18125/62. Heading B7C. A device which enables tyre inflation pressure to be adjusted to suit varying speeds comprises a pump 5 driven by rotation of the wheel 2 to inflate the inflationary chamber 14 of the tyre 1, and at least two pressure-relief valves 18, 20 which open to the atmosphere at different pressures, means 21 being provided to take at least one valve 20 out of operation. As shown, an aircraft wheel 2 rotates on a stationary axle 3 to operate the pump 5 by means of rod 15 eccentrically pivoted on the axle 3. The pump 5 inflates the tyre 1 through chamber 13 and passage 13a, the valve 18 being set to open at the desired maximum inflation pressure. The valve 20 is set to open at the desired minimum pressure, but may be taken out of operation by closing a switch 26 to close the solenoid operated valve 21, which is otherwise held open by a spring 23. Thus the tyre pressure will adjust towards the minimum or maximum if switch 26 is open or closed respectively. A number of valves 20, each with a cut-off valve 21, may be provided, opening at different pressures. The valve 21 may be placed between valve 20 and the atmosphere. The pump 5 may be of the eccentric vane type, and more than one pump may be provided on one wheel. One switch 26 may operate valves on all the wheels of an aircraft. The device may be detachable from the wheel.
