Abstract

1,029,383. Jointing by stamping; welding by pressure. H. J. MANSELL. May 29, 1964 [May 31, 1963], No. 22330/64. Headings B3Q and B3R. A portable, hand-operated tool for joining or cutting electrical conductors, compressing terminals on conductors &c., comprises a jaw 11 movable by hydraulic means 72, 73, 120, force transmitting means 130, 131 between the hydraulic means and the jaw, cams 35, 36 operating the hydraulic means, and a handle 40 for turning the cams. The handle 40, through a lever 48 and a link 50, oscillates a plate 53 fixed to a member 18, Fig. 6 (not shown), rotatable on a cam carrier 28. A spring- pressed tooth 33 on the carrier 28 engages pockets in the member 18, clutching the carrier and member 18 together in one direction of rotation. During return oscillations of member 18, the carrier is held by engagement between a spring-pressed ball 58 cattied by the cam 35, and one of several spaced lugs 55. There are three cams 35, 36, 99 on the carrier 28, two (35, 36) for operating simultaneously pump-pistons 74, 74a, Fig. 12 (not shown), and one for operating a spring-returned valve 93. Fluid from the pumps passes along conduits 150, 151, Fig. 13 (not shown), to the valve 93, which directs it, through a port 148 and a conduit 154 with a non-return valve 156, beneath the piston 120, Fig. 5 (not shown). This piston moves the jaw 11 by straightening a toggle linkage 130, 131 against the influence of a return spring 146. One of the links bears in a slide 67 which may be moved away from the other link 130 by rotating the handle 62, the screw-threaded end of which has a shoulder 65 engaging the slide, thus adjusting the links into a straighter condition and increasing the jaw-force. Towards the end of the valve cam's rotation, the rise 99b (Fig. 12) from the dwell 99a shifts the valve 93 (Fig. 13) until it uncovers the port 153. Ports 148, 152 remain open and port 163 closed, so that fluid from the pumps passes, through the port 153 and conduits 167-169, back to the pumps to enter the spaces behind the pumppistons. The non-return valve 156 prevents escape of fluid from behind piston 120. As the pump-pistons pass off the ends of the cams 35, 36, the valve 93 is again re-set by a rise 99d on cam 99. This uncovers port 163 and interconnects the conduits 149, 162 for return to the pumps of the fluid behind the piston 120. At the end of the adjustment of slide 67, Fig. 8 (not shown), a plunger 111 enters a pocket in the slide, permitting movement of a valve 103 by its spring 108. This closes the port 164 (Fig. 13), so that pressure increases behind the piston J20 until the pump-pistons reach the end of their stroke. The valve 93 may be re-set manually by a ring 102 to release the pressure.
