1,029,378. Disc brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM. GES.). Aug. 26, 1964 [Sept. 4, 1963], No. 34929/64. Heading F2E. In a spot-type disc brake a brake casing 3 is slidable in a brake carrier 4, 5 and one arm 10 of the brake casing bears against a brake friction pad 16, the other arm 9 of the brake casing bearing an actuating device 11, 12, 13 to operate a second brake friction pad 15 against the other face of the brake disc 1, a slack-adjusting and centering device being provided between the brake carrier and the brake casing. The slack adjusting and centering device comprises a rod 20 which is attached by means of a pin 21 to the carrier 14 for the brake friction pad 15, the rod 20 passing through a sliding bearing 19 provided on a lug 17 and through a lug 18 mounted on the brake casing 3 and through a lug 5 attached to the brake carrier 4, both the lugs 18 and 5 housing friction elements 22, 6 respectively which are disposed on the rod 20 and are compressed by springs 23, 7 respectively. In operation, when the brake applying lever 11 is pivoted, a thrust member 12 and a screwed connection 13 are forced against the carrier 13 to urge the brake friction pad 15 against the brake disc 1 and by reaction the casing 3 approaches the brake disc 1 and the brake friction pad 16 is applied thereagainst. The pin 21 of the carrier 14 moves the rod 20 towards the brake disc and if excessive wear of the brake friction pads takes place the rod 20 is forced through the friction elements 6, 22 to adjust for brake pad wear. When the brake is released the force of the springs 7, 23 is available to return the rod 20 and the friction elements 6, 22. The friction pad 15 is moved away from the brake disc by the amount of the travel of the springs 7. The rod 20 moves the casing 3 and the brake friction pad 16 by the same amount of the right towards the brake disc 1 and the movement of the casing is opposed by the springs 23 which have twice the travel of the other springs and therefore compensate for the rightward movement of the brake casing produced by the springs 7 and also move the brake casing 3 and the brake friction pads 16 to the left away from the brake disc 1 by the same amount as the travel of the springs 7.
