Abstract
1,029,264. Thermal switches. TUNG-SOL ELECTRIC Inc. May 31, 1963 [June 1, 1962], No. 22009/63. Heading H2B. In a snap - action switch, intended for use as a flasher unit, a movable contact 20 on a flexible vane 14, held in compression by two crimped side portions, is controlled between engagement with a stop 60 and a contact 36 by a pull wire 28 held in tension between supports 24, 26 on the vane 14 and frame of the switch respectively. The pull wire is made to expand by a heating wire 34, insulated with quartz coating 32, which surrounds and heats the pull wire 28. The moving contact 20 and one end of the heating wire 34 are connected to a grounded source of potential and the fixed contact 36 and other end of wire 34 are connected through terminal 44 and a load, for example an indicator bulb, to ground, so that current passes through the heating wire when contacts 20, 36 are open, heating the pull wire 28, which expands and allows vane to snap over, closing contacts 20, 36. This shunts out the heating wire and current energizes the load 38 until the pull wire cools sufficiently to snap the contacts open. Fixed contact 36, stop 60 and wire anchorage 26 are adjustable.
