Abstract

1,027,931. Securing bolts to work; securing nuts against loss. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. Jan. 24, 1963 [Feb. 28, 1962], No. 7907/62. Heading F2H. A panel 1 is removably attached to a panel land 2 of an aircraft by a nut 8 held captive in the panel by a sleeve 9 and with its countersunk head 18 proud of the panel surface until it is screwed down on to a bolt 5 anchored to the land 2 by a housing 3 which is bolted or riveted to the land and in which the bolt is held against turning and is urged upwardly by a spring 6. The bolt is in screwed connection with a threaded insert 40 fixed in the nut 8. By means of a screwdriver slot 38 in its head 18 the nut 8 can be turned in its retaining sleeve 9 in which it is held by resilient tongues at the free sleeve end 19, the other sleeve end having a flange 29 located in a counterbore 21 in the panel 1 or in the land 2. Protrusion of the nut 8 will indicate if it works loose but this protrusion will not exceed X+Y, where X is the distance between the end 19 of the nut-retaining sleeve 9 and an adjacent flange 28 on the nut and Y the vertical movement of the sleeve flange 29 permitted by the counterbore 21.
