Abstract

A method of manufacturing boarded panels 21 having a central layer in the form of corrugated wood veneer strip 9<SP>1</SP> having its grain extending perpendicularly to its length and to the boarding comprises continuously peeling a veneer strip of desired thickness from a freshly felled or steamed veneer trunk 1 and subdivided the strip into strips of desired width by cutting discs 10 which penetrate into the trunk and removing the surplus water from the strips by a dryer 18 while they are given a meandering shape. The cutting discs 10 penetrate the trunk before the strips are cut by a knife 4, the thickness of the strips being determined by a roller. The cut strips are fed by pairs of belts 13, 13<SP>1</SP> to a shaping device having a pair of chains 16<SP>1</SP>, 1611, each of which carries cooperating cells 151, 15<SP>11</SP>. The chains move the cells intermittently so that the cut strips form the shape shown in the cells and are then carried over a dryer 18 so that the shape of the strips is fixed. As the cells separate, the corrugated strips are directed by shoots 19 on to a base-plate 21 of a frame 20 reciprocated in the direction of the arrow. The length of strip in the frame may be increased by compressing the convolutions of the strip by a pusher. The baseplates may be covered with glue before the introduction of the strips and a glue-covered cover-plate may be pressed on to the whole after filling with the strip. In another embodiment, the strip is corrugated and dried by heated shaping rollers 25, 26.
