A brake for a tractor comprises an annular rotatable member 10 having an axiallyextending portion 14 forming a braking surface, a non-rotatable member 16 located adjacent the braking surface and a pair of hydraulic brakeapplying mechanisms 20 to force a pair of friction elements 19 into engagement with the braking surface, wherein the friction elements are guided and supported in apertures 18 in the member 16 up to a position adjacent the braking surface. The friction elements are formed by pads 19 bonded to backing plates 24 which are detachably secured to pistons 22 and may be removed axially through a closable aperture in a cover plate 25. The pistons 22 may be fitted with retraction devices to draw the pads out of engagement with the braking surface and to compensate for wear. A hand brake arrangement comprises a pad 28, secured to a backing plate 29 and disposed in an aperture 38 in the member 16, which is applied against the braking surface by a bell-crank lever 31 pivoted on a support plate 30. One arm of the lever 31 is connected to a linkage 33 and a rod 34 is screw-threaded into the other arm so as to abut the outer face of the backing plate 29. In a modification the diametrically opposed fluid pressure piston-cylinder mechanisms are inclined at 30 degrees to the diameter on which they lie, both being inclined towards the normal direction of rotation of the member 10 to provide a self-servo effect. The webs 15 on the member 10 can be formed as vanes which assist in circulating cooling air through the housing, parts of which may be omitted to promote cooling.
