Abstract

Low-carbon (0.03-0.15% C) steel is nitrided, e.g. to N contents up to 0.08%, by coating the surface of the steel with a film of a nitrogen-containing compound which decomposes and only releases most of its nitrogen above 600 DEG F., and maintaining the coated steel e.g. in the form of coiled strip or wire or stacked in a nitriding atmosphere at a temperature e.g. between 600 DEG F. and 1300 DEG F. at which the compound is decomposed for a time sufficient to nitride the steel throughout. To minimize denitriding of e.g. coil edges, externally generated ammonia may be introduced into the furnace atmosphere. Suitable nitrogen-containing compounds are guanidine compounds such as cyanoguanidine, guanidine carbonate and chloride; ammonium carbonate or urea are unsuitable for the invention. The film is preferably provided by applying to the steel an aqueous solution of the compound.
