Abstract

1,023,153. Photo-electric current measurement. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd. Jan. 18, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1962], No. 2286/62. Headings G1A and G1U. Apparatus for the measurement of current in a high voltage A.C. transmission line 2 includes in combination an electric light source 6, means to supply the source with an A.C. component proportional to the current in the transmission line and a D.C. component larger than the largest normal A.C. component and means 12 responsive to the source 6. As shown, current from the line 2 is supplied to two current transformers 4, 5 by a current transformer 1, and a neon or other discharge tube 6 is supplied with D.C. from secondary cells 8 which are continuously charged by the transformer 4 through a rectifier 9 and with A.C. from the transformer 5. The resultant signal from a silicon junction photo-cell 12 which receives light from the tube 6 by means of a light guide 11 therefore consists of a sine wave reproduction of the line current in addition to a D.C. component, and this signal is fed to an A.C. amplifier 14 with a negative feedback circuit 15, 16, the D.C. component being blocked by a capacitor 19. The amplifier 14 supplies an output transformer 17 feeding a measuring instrument 18. The secondary cells 8 may be replaced by primary cells or by a resistor-capacitor smoothing circuit, Fig. 2, (not shown). The light guide 11 may be replaced by a pair of lenses, Fig. 3, (not shown).
