A silent closing device for a vehicle door comprises a U-shaped cradle 1 fixed inside a door below the position of the handles, the cradle 1 being provided in its front portion with a hinge 2 for a fork-shaped lever 3, the front leg 4 of said lever being provided at its end with a castor 7 adapted to penetrate in the closed position of the door into a cavity 25, Fig. 5 (not shown), in the framing column 26 of the door inside which is fixed a guiding nose 27 for the castor. The end of the rear leg 5 of the forked lever 3 is connected to a U-shaped attachment member 9 by means of a hinge 8 independent of the cradle, the attachment member being spot welded to the front wall 10 of a movable cylinder 11 filled with oil and enclosing a coil spring 17 interposed between the front wall 10 and a piston 15. The piston is provided with communicating holes 20 and a nylon diaphragm 19 secured to the piston rod 14 and adapted to mask the openings of said holes issuing into the rear face of the piston, the piston rod 14 passing through a guiding plug 13 secured to the rear end of the cylinder 11, the base of said rod 14 pivoting on a hinge 23 in the rear end of the cradle. Means are provided for locking the vehicle door in a closed position. The device is so arranged that before the engagement of the castor on the guiding nose 27 the forked lever 3 is maintained in contact with a stop 12 on the cradle under the action of the spring 17, the hinge 8 being situated below the plane defined by the hinges 2, 23 on the cradle and when the castor is in contact with the guiding nose the lever 3 rocks and the hinge 8 passes to the other side of said plane while allowing the spring to loosen and cause the lever 3 to pivot so that the castor 7 penetrates completely into the cavity 25 bringing the door into the closed position. The diaphragm 19 and the piston 15 have a groove 21 at their peripheries for the flow of oil during the closing of the door. The diaphragm 19 uncovers the communicating holes 20 for the free flow of oil during door opening. The locking means for the door, Fig. 7 (not shown), comprises a bolt 32 spring loaded into a cavity 33 of the door framing column, the rear end of the bolt 32 having a hole for a cable 38 one end of which, after having been wound partly around a guiding roller 39, is fixed on a push button 40 adjoining the outer handle of the door, the other end of said cable being wound around and fixed to the spindle 42 of the inner handle 43 of the door. The outer door handle is provided with a lock having a lug adapted to penetrate into the push button 40.
