Abstract
Ethylene is oxidized to ethylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst which has been made by impregnating with an aqueous silver salt solution porous particles having an average diameter not greater than 5/16 inch, a surface area of not greater than 1 sq. m/gm. and an average pore diameter of at least 10 m , drying the impregnated particles and actuating the dried particles by heating. Oxidation is preferably effected at 150-400 DEG C., 50-500 p.s.i.g. and a gaseous charge comprising 0.5-10% ethylene, 3-20% oxygen and the remainder inerts such as N2 and CO2. Recycling of unchanged ethylene may be resorted to.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst is made by impregnating with an aqueous silver salt solution porous particles having an average diameter not greater than 5/16 inch, a surface area not greater than 1 sq. m./gm. and an average pore diameter of at least 10m , drying the impregnated particles and activating the dried particles by heating. Specified SiO2-Al2O3 particles contain minor proportions of Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, MgO and Na2O and K2O. A small amount of H2O2 added to the catalyst prevents silver precipitation. Ba lactate may act as a promoter.
