Abstract

A clear aqueous liquid shampoo composition comprises (1) a water-insoluble liquid lanolin fraction, (ii) as non-ionic surfactant a polyoxyethylene ether produced by condensation of lanolin alcohols with 16 mols ethylene oxide an (iii) a higher fatty acid alkanolamide; the ratio of (ii) to (i) and of (iii) to (i) to achieve a synergistic solubilizing effect is 1:1 to 3:1 and 0.5:1 to 7:1 respectively. The composition may also contain (iv) a fatty acid soap and/or synthetic detergent other than (ii) or (iii) in an amount 5-30% by weight of the total composition. The lanolin oil (i) is conveniently predominant in lanolin esters; a typical oil is the liquid fraction obtained from wool grease. The non-ionic surfactant (ii) may be that marketed under the trade-mark "Nimcolan S." Constituent (iii) is preferably the diethanolamide of coconut fatty acid. A suitable composition contains 1% lanolin fraction (i), 2-3% non-ionic surfactant (ii), 0.5-3% alkanolamide (iii) and 8-24% soap or detergent (iv) (all by wt.). Triethanol-amine lauryl sulphate is the preferred additional soap/detergent (iv), others specified being sodium lauryl polyoxyethylene ether sulphate, triethanolamine dodecyl benzene sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, potassium oleate and triethanolamine oleate. The composition (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) is preferably prepared by mixing the lanolin and the solubilizing agents (ii), (iii) on the one hand, an aqueous solution of the soap/detergent (iv) on the other, heating each to 75-80 DEG C. and adding the oil mixture to the soap/detergent. Optional additives include perfumes (0.4% by wt.), colouring agents, dyes and preservatives, none being specified. In one example propylene glycol is included. The composition may be used as hair shampoo or hand lotion.
