Abstract

A furnace for treating hydrocarbons, e.g. for cracking or reforming, comprises a cylindrical cluster of tubes 8 arranged adjacent the wall 3 of a vessel 1 . . . 3, an axial burner 5 whose flame is directed parallel with the tubes 8, and burners 17 on the wall 3 which direct their flames to lick the wall 3. The burners 17 may be star burners, and the wall 3 preferably has ribs 18 to assist heat radiation towards the tubes 8, which may contain catalyst. The tubes 8 are connected by flexible hose 12, 15 to outlet and inlet ring manifolds 13, 16 respectively, and the tubes 8 have removable plugs 11. Additional burners may be provided on the hearth 1 and/or on the roof 2.
