An incinerator has a main combustion chamber 2 with a grate 3 and an auxiliary burner 5 separated from secondary combustion chambers 11a, 11 by a partition 28. Catalytic material, which may be spent catalyst from a hydrocarbon hydrogenation plant, on trays 7 adjacent passages 27 through the partition assists in the completion of the combustion. A partition 12 shielding the flue outlet 16a acts as a further catalyst, and may be coated. Burners are mounted at 6 in the secondary combustion chambers. A conduit passing through the secondary combustion chambers delivers heated primary air at 20 below the grate, and also feeds cold, and warm secondary air to the secondary combustion chambers 11, 11a respectively. The burners 5, 6 may be automatically controlled so that the refuse is not ignited until the catalysts are sufficiently hot to consume the smoke.
