Abstract

Pyridine is prepared by the catalytic reaction in the vapour phase and at elevated temperatures of ammonia and one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:1018779/C2/1> wherein R is hydroxy or amino, and R1 is alkoxy, acyloxy or hydrogen, oxygen being included in the reaction mixture. Steam also is preferably present. The catalyst may be a dehydration or cracking catalyst, may also possess an oxidative function, and may be used in a fluidized condition. The pyridine may be recovered by distillation or extracted with benzene or a homologue. Specified reactants are tetrahydrofurfuryl al alcohol and amine, and 3,4 - dihydro - 2H - pyran or a 2 - alkoxy or acyloxy derivative thereof. Catalysts include alumina, silica-alumina, and their mixtures with oxides of Cd, Pb, Zn, Mo, Ti, Zr, Mn, V, and elements of the La series or with salts, e.g. lead fluoride or sodium or potassium carbonate or sulphate.ALSO:Catalysts useful in the production of pyridine are SiO2, Al2O3 or mixtures thereof if desired together with CdO, PbO, ZnO, MoO3, TiO2, ZrO2, or a R.E. metal oxide. Alternatively metal salts may be added to SiO2 and/or Al2O3, e.g. PbF2, Na2CO3, K2CO3, Na2SO4 or K2SO4. Conventional methods of preparation are described. Regeneration of spent catalyst may be effected by passage thereover of air or air and steam. In examples, the use of Ce, La, Di*, Pr, Nd, Zr, Ti, PbO, Cd, V2O5+MnO2, Zn, H3PO4, alkali metal carbonates and sulphates, PbF2 is described.
