Abstract

[Also in Division F2] An auxiliary driving system for assisting or retarding, e.g. on inclines, self-propelled vehicles 6 running on railway tracks 1, which may be mono-rail or multi-rail types, comprises an endless cable 8 carried and driven by pulleys 9 and 10, the vehicles having clamps (see Division F2) actuated by trackside ramps 40 and 41 to grip the cable after passing the first pulley encountered and to release the cable prior to passing the last pulley. As shown, a train of vehicles 6, some of which are self-propelled run on a mono-rail track 1 and carry a pipe line 4, filled with a material to be transported, by means of hangers 5. The cable 8 is mounted adjacent to the track 1 which is carried by supports 3, the pulley 9 being driven by an electric motor 12 acting through a clutch 13, reduction gear 14 and torque limiter 15. The cable is tensioned by means of a weight 28 acting through a cable 29, a pair of pulleys 30 and 26, and a cable 25, on a frame 23, 24, carrying the pulley 10. This frame slides on bearers 21 and 22 carried by the supports 3.
