Abstract

1,018,484. Boots &c. H. WILISCH. May 28, 1964 [May 28, 1963], No. 22183/64. Heading A3B. Apparatus for pressing a foxing strip against the edge of the sole and the lower margin of the upper of a shoe, to secure it by means of an intermediate bonding medium, comprises a shoe support 1, a wall A which surrounds and is spaced from at least the greater part of the shoe and one or more inflatable pressure cushions b1 which press the foxing strip against the shoe. The pressure cushion b1 consists of a rubber or plastics tubing enclosed in a leather or plastics casing and is attached to the wall A along its top edge only (Fig. 3a) or along both the bottom and top edge. The cushion b may entirely surround the shoe (Fig. 1 not shown) and resilient spacing pieces 5 (Fig. 4 not shown) may be inserted between the cushion b to compensate for shoes of a smaller size. The shaping piece may be stepped (not shown) and movable heightwise in the machine to accommodate a range of sizes of shoes. Alternatively the cushion may not enclose one or both ends of the shoe (Fig. 7 not shown) and a shaping piece 7 carried by a pneumatic piston and cylinder 12 presses the foxing strip against the toe and/or heel of the shoe. The shoe may be supported on an adjustable support (Fig. 3a) or the shoe may be clamped against an inflatable cushion (not shown) which applies pressure to the sole.
