Abstract

An electrical resistor comprises a glass or ceramic substrate, preferably an aluminosilicate type glass free from alkali metal ions, over which is applied a primary conducting element consisting of a metal oxide film composed of 100-37% by weight of In2O3 and O-63% by weight of either SnO2 or a combination of SnO2 and Sb2O3 in which the ratio by weight of SnO2 to Sb2O3 is at least 3:2, and an outer modifying and protective metal oxide film composed of 100-50% by weight of Sb2O3 and 0-50% by weight of SnO2, spaced electrical terminals being in electrical contact with both metal oxide films. The metal oxide films may be produced by conventional iridizing techniques and it is convenient to use an aqueous solution in which chlorides of the relevant metals are dissolved in hydrochloric acid, the aqueous solution being atomized with suitable spray equipment and directed on to the heated substrate surface. A suitable solution for producing the primary conducting element by the atomization method is prepared by mixing 50 ml. of diluted aqueous HCl (1 part conc. HCl to 5 parts H2O) containing 50 gm. InCl3 with 50 ml. of the same diluted aqueous HCl containing 49,5 gm. SnCl4.5H2O and 0,5 gm. SbCl3. As calculated on the basis of molecular weight conversion factors, the conducting oxide film produced from this solution will contain approximately 60% by weight of In2O3, 39,4% by weight of SnO2 and 0,6% by weight of Sb2O3. A film forming solution for the outer modifying and protective film may contain 60 parts by weight of SbCl3 to 40 parts by weight of SnCl4.5H2O, the calculated oxide equivalents being 69% by weight of Sb2O3 and 31% by weight of SnO2. Graphs are given showing the relationship between surface resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity for resistors with oxide films of different compositions and thicknesses. Resistors according to this invention have been produced which have substantially zero temperature coefficients, stable resistance characteristics and resistivity values up to about 6000 ohms/square.
