Abstract

639,561. Electric heating resistances. CORNING GLASS WORKS. April 11, 1947, Nos. 9736 and 9737. Convention dates, May 2, 1946 and Dec. 18, 1946. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXVI] A heating device comprises a vitreous ceramic or glass body having an iridized conductive coating containing stannic oxide and an oxide of antimony. The proportion of antimony oxide may be equivalent to 0.001 per cent to 15 per cent Sb2O3. The coating may also contain not more than 20 per cent of at least one other metal oxide, the chloride of which metal is hydrolysable, such as zinc oxide, cobalt oxide or manganese oxide. The conductive coating is applied by heating the said body and exposing it whilst heated to the fumes of a mixture of a chloride of tin and a chloride of antimony or an atomized solution of such a mixture. Other salts of tin and antimony may likewise be employed. Examples are given of the results obtained from coatings containing various percentages of the above constituents. The coatings are transparent or translucent depending upon their thickness and are suitable for heating window panes, flat irons, space heaters, wall panels, &c. An electric toaster may comprise two such coated glass plates 120 between which bread 128 is located. When applied to glass bodies the glass itself becomes conductive if sufficiently heated by the conductive coating so that the coating may be used to facilitate the working or welding together of glass sheets.
