Abstract

1,018,248. Video-frequency recording &c. apparatus; head switching. AMPEX CORPORATION. April 3, 1964 [May 17, 1963], No. 13832/64. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H3] In a magnetic video tape recorder, four playback heads H1 ... H4 are mounted on the periphery of a rotary drum arranged to pass the heads transversely across the tape, diametrically opposed pairs of heads H1, H3; H2, H4 being connected via slip-rings 22, 24, pre-amplifiers (not shown) and emitter followers Q1, Q1<SP>1</SP> to switching circuits S1, S2 which alternately shortcircuit the signals fed respectively via resistors 40, 40<SP>1</SP> so that the signals from the other group of heads are respectively fed via resistors 42, 42<SP>1</SP> to an emitter follower Q<SP>1</SP>. Each switching circuit comprises a complementary pair of transistors Q3, Q4, Q3<SP>1</SP>, Q4<SP>1</SP>, each pair being made simultaneously conductive during alternate half-cycles of the output of a multivibrator 52, giving two pulses per drum revolution. When conductive, the transistors Q3, Q4 clamp the voltage at the junction of resistors 40, 42 to a level within the positive or negative saturation voltages of the transistors.
