Abstract

1,017,336. Semi-conductor devices. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 20, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10277/62. Heading H1K. A semi-conductor device comprises a body with a planar diffused junction extending to the periphery the surface at which tapers off at an angle not greater than 30 degrees. Shaping of the semi-conductor body may be affected by apparatus as shown in Fig. 4 in which a plurality of circular semi-conductor wafers 7, 8, 9, each comprising planar PN junctions are clamped between polythene blocks 3, 4, 5 and then oscillated or gyrated in a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. The process results in the exposed edges of the wafers being etched away to leave a portion with an inclined surface. A cylinder 11 may be used to line up the wafers and blocks before clamping. If a single junction with etching on one surface only is desired the blocks may be arranged to screen the whole of the opposing surface.
