Abstract

1,017,055. Fishing reels. H. POLICANSKY. Oct. 4, 1962 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5930/62. Heading A1A. A fishing reel comprises a variable friction coupling between its winding handle 21 and the spool 8, the coupling comprising a friction member 37 engaging a friction surface 38 on the flange 8c of the spool 8 and the friction member 37 and the spool being rotatably mounted on a two-part spindle 9, 10 supported between frame side members 1, 2. The spindle part 10 is mounted in a slidable bearing 12 in the side member 2 and is screwed into a bore 11 in the spindle part 9 by means of a lever 51 to vary the pressure on the friction coupling. The lever 51 is keyed to the outer end of the spindle part 10 and is maintained in an adjusted position by a non-rotatable washer 54 urged by a spring 55 to abut a friction washer 53 located on the spindle 10 between the washer, 54 and the lever 51. The friction member 37 is secured to a pinion 32 driven by a gear wheel 31 secured to one end of a shaft 23 running in bearings 26 and having secured to the other end the winding handle 21. A compression spring 57 for urging the friction surface out of contact "with the coupling member 37 is disposed around the spindles 9, 10 between a flange 42 of the coupling member 37 and one of two ball bearings 16 on which the spool 8 is mounted. The pressure between coupling and spool can also be adjusted by rotating the part-spindle 9 whilst the partspindle 10 is prevented from rotating. For this purpose a knob 62 is connected to a pinion 60 engaging a gear wheel 58 keyed to the spindle 9. A compression spring 63 and two friction washers 64 located on the knob shaft 61 maintain the pinion 60 in the adjusted position. An annular member 35 rivetted to the member 37 has three equi-spaced radially projecting portions the arcuate spaces 44 therebetween being provided with ramps pressed out from the coupling member 37 to form three outwardly facing ratchet teeth. A pawl 45 slidably mounted in a cylindrical recess 47 in the slide plate 2 is urged by a compression spring 48 to engage the ratchet teeth to prevent rotation of the coupling 37 in an anti-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3 (not shown). The spring 48 also holds a sealing disc 49 against the inside of a lubricating port 50. An audible clicking device, Fig. 3 (not shown) comprises a toothed ring 65 screwed on to the hub 8a of the spool 8 the teeth thereof being engaged by a finger 66 having a shaft 68 rotatably mounted in a radially extending slot in the side member 1 and provided with an operating knob 70 for disengaging the finger 66. The finger is urged into engagement with the teeth by a pair of semi-circular leaf springs 71 engaging recesses 72 in the finger. When disengaging the finger the knob 70 is pushed radially outwards and the springs 71 leave the recess 72 and grip the inwardly tapering side of the finger to maintain disengagement. The winding handle may comprise an arm hinged to the end of the shaft 23 by a lockable hinge disposed parallel to the arm.
