Abstract

1,247,058. Securing reels on spindles. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 21 Nov., 1967 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55364/68. Heading F2U. [Also in Divisions G2-G3] A coaxially arranged spindle assembly for use in a cine projector or other web handling apparatus comprises a supply reel supporting member 18 which may (a) rotate freely on fixed shaft 371; (b) be driven by a friction drive providing a torque dependent on the reel weight; or (c) be driven by a friction drive providing a constant torque. Weight dependent torque mode.-Member 18 has a flange 374 which enters and frictionally engages the face of a drum member 373 freely rotatable on, but axially fixed on, shaft 371. The friction depends on the tilt of member 18 under the weight of a reel-finger member 375 is slidable on shaft 371 and has fingers 376 extending through apertures 377 in drum 373 to engage holes in flange 374. Therefore, when member 375 is axially shifted by control lever 424 away from member 18, fingers 376 disengage from flange 374, while lug 384 engages a lug 383 on extension 381 of a belt-driven pulley 379. Drive is then transmitted to member 18 through frictional engagment only with drum 373. Constant torque mode.-A friction clutch collar 386 is keyed to, and slidable on, extension 381 and has a wire 388 retained in groove 389 with an end forming a clutch finger 392. Therefore, with member 375 positioned with fingers 376 engaging flange 374, when collar 386 as slid away from member 375 by control lever 431, clutch finger 392 engages a lug 393 of the member. The drive of pulley 379 is then transmitted directly to member 18 through the constant friction torque between wire 388 and groove 389. Free rotation mode.-With collar 386 and member 375 bolts displaced towards member 18, no drive is transmitted to drum 373 and member 18, and these may rotate freely on shaft 371. The spindle assembly is of use in a projector as disclosed in co-pending Application No. 55365/68 during reverse winding, the weight dependent mode being applicable to film supplied from a cartridge, and the constant torque mode being applicable to film supplied from a heavy reel.
