Abstract

An aluminium-containing paste for incorporating into paints, varnishes and cellular concrete, is made by grinding together a mixture of granulated aluminium, 3 to 15% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide with a molecular weight of 1500 to 2000, and at least 100% by weight of one or more saturated hydrocarbons such that the aluminium grains are dispersed in platelet, flake or scale form, the percentages being based on the aluminium content. The paste is thickened by centrifuging or filtration to reduce the saturated hydrocarbon content. Grain sizes specified are 60 to 120 microns. The paste is dispersible in water and organic liquids to give a homogeneous suspension. In the example, 100 kg. granulated aluminium, 8 kg. copolymer of M.W. about 1900 and 200 kg. white spirit are ground together at room temperature and centrifuged, the centrifuging step removing 50% by weight of the original white spirit content.
