Abstract

A vapour generator comprises a vertical casing 10 having a removable closure 14 at the upper end and having within it, providing the heating surface, a number of clusters 24 of U-tubes 26 the two sets of legs of which are connected respectively to inlet and outlet manifolds 28 disposed at the upper end of the casing, each manifold serving only one tube cluster and being connected, as appropriate either to an inlet 20 to or an outlet 22 from the casing at its upper end for the fluid being heated. A cross-section of a cluster of tubes is shown in Fig. 2. The inlet and outlet pipes 20, 22 pass through the closure 14 so that the tube assembly and the closure may be removed as one unit. The heating liquid which may be a liquefied metal such as sodium or pressurized water is contained in an inner casing 12 with an inlet 18 and an outlet 16 for the heating liquid, the level 32 of which is maintained below the manifolds 28 and inlet and outlet pipes 20. 22, 30. The space between the casings 10 and 12 and the space 34 above the heating liquid are filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen. The vapour generator may have a number of inlets and outlets for the heated liquid to which U- tube clusters are connected to provide several independent circuits. The casing may be partitioned to allow the heating liquid to flow in series over the groups of U-tube clusters belonging to different circuits or connected in series through headers, to provide economizer, steam generating and superheating sections.
