Abstract

To prevent slip at the gripping jaws of a tensile strength and elongation testing device for textile yarns, the ends of the test length 27 beyond each jaw assembly are wrapped around slotted bollards 25 provided with clamps 29 and connected, via a rod 22 and spring 21,with the associated jaw assembly and with a bar 28 through which tension is applied. The upper jaw 14 of each jaw assembly is movable, by means of a cam-ended lever 20 (Fig. 2), towards the lower jaw 10 for gripping the yarn, but adjustable tension springs 21 prevent the full load being applied to the portion of yarn between the jaw assemblies until a given load is exceeded. Excess loading is then operative on the portion of yarn between the jaws but slipping is prevented owing to the tension in the ends of the yarn. The jaw assemblies can move on a slideway 11 and a length scale 33 is provided. In modifications, the springs may be located between the bollards and the jaws may be replaced by hydraulic or electromagnetic means. The clamping jaws may include hydraulically- or pneumatically-loaded deformable membranes so that the yarn may be gripped without crushing.
