Abstract

1,014,487. Switches held set and freed mechanically; switch cases; carrying conductors through partitions; control of A.C. motors. TOKHEIM CORPORATION. May 24, 1962 [May 24, 1961], No. 20088/62. Headings H2B, H2E and H2J. [Also in Divisions A4 and F1] In an automobile filling station installation a header supports a submersible motor pump unit (see Division F1) within a tank, which unit employs a ¥-horsepower induction motor 299, 321, Fig. 9, operable on 208 to 230 volts A.C., whereas its control circuit operates on half that voltage. Two live mains 237, 239 and a neutral main 241 are connected through master switch 236 and wires 263, 265, 257 to a socket and jack switch 365, 367. This switch is mounted in fixed and removable parts of. the header so that disassembly of the removable part of the header results in disconnection of the switch. When one of a number of switches 59, each associated with a fuel dispenser (not shown), is closed, a relay coil 253 is energized by a 110-volt supply (i.e. the mains 239, 241), and closes switches 275, 277 to allow a 220-volt supply (i.e. the mains 237, 239) to energize the main winding 299 of the induction motor and thereby generate a voltage in the phase winding 321. When the generated voltage reaches a predetermined value, correspondng to the speed of the motor at which starting capacitor 289 is no longer required, a starting relay coil 307 opens switch 313, which is normally closed, to break the circuit through the capacitor 289. A running capacitor 295 is omitted from the circuit when the motor is of small horsepower such as 1/2 or 1/3-horsepower. An automatically resetting thermal overload switch 283 is provided. In the header shown in Fig. 4, the socket and jack switch has an upper portion 367 associated with a removable portion 21 of the header and a lower portion 365 associated with a fixed portion 19 of the header. The supply leads from the mains enter a chamber 341 through a chamber 415, which may be filled with potting material, and a tapered rubber plug 417 compressed in a bore 419 by an oval plate 425 and two screws 427. The jacks are each contacted by a brush 457 connected by a rivet 459 to the supply leads for the relays, capacitors, overload switch and induction motor. Before bolts 533 securing the removable portion 21 of the header are accessible, bolts 535 securing a yoke 525 carrying shroud tubes 531 must be removed. This allows the compression spring 481 to raise the rod 504, yoke 525 and piston 483, carrying the jacks, until the latter are clear of their sockets and the switch thereby disconnected. The 110-volt jacks are shorter than the 220-volt jacks so that, on release of the yoke 525, the line relay coil 253 (Fig. 9) is de-energized to open the switches 275, 277 before the longer jacks leave their sockets, thereby preventing sparking. The jacks are mounted loosely on pins 497, Fig. 7, so that they may centralize themselves in their respective sockets. The piston 483 has four locating projections, one 489 of which differs from the rest so as to prevent incorrect assembly. In an alternative arrangement of the socket and jack switch, Fig. 12 (not shown), a portion fixed to the removable header part 21 has a set of four jacks protruding from each of its upper and lower sides, the upper set being associated with a set of four sockets arranged on a piston controlled by the rod 504, and the lower set being associated with a set of four sockets fixed to a carrier secured to the fixed header part 19. Another arrangement, Fig. 14 (not shown), has a piston with jacks protruding from its upper and lower sides positioned between two fixed members carrying the associated sockets, the piston and these members being mounted in the fixed header part 19. The member above the piston additionally has sockets on its upper face which connect with jacks protruding from a member secured to the removable header portion 21. In a third alternative arrangement, Fig. 17, the removable header part 21<SP>1</SP> surrounds the fixed header part 19<SP>1</SP>, and a piston 705 is moved to engage sockets 707 therein with jacks 695 on the fixed header part 19<SP>1</SP>. The piston is moved by a rack 717, located in a guide 719, and a pinion 731 rotated manually by a knob 727. The piston includes a casing 709 which protrudes to the right by an amount which will ensure that the electrical connection is broken before the part 21<SP>1</SP> can be removed.
