Abstract

1,014,063. Wire ropes. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Sept. 11, 1963 [Sept.18, 1962], No. 35888/63. Heading D1T. [Also in Division B3] A method of making a stranded wire structure comprises stranding wires 8, 10 around a core 2 to form a covering, one of the core and covering being made of steel wires, which are stressed due to the stranding operation, and the other being made of non-ferrous material, and then heating the steel wires to a temperature between 600 and 1100‹F. to relieve the stress. A cable C may be made comprising a single or stranded copper conductor 2 surrounded by rubber or neoprene insulating material 4 which is encased in a heat shield 6 of cotton, asbestos or p-t-f-e. Two opposite-hand layers 8, 10 of drawn stainless &c. steel wire protect the cable, and at least the outer layer is stress-relieved as the cable is passed through an induction heater 18 which may be located adjacent the strander 12. Nitrogen &c.is supplied to a sleeve 14 surrounded by the heater, through which the cable is drawn by a capstan 22 to a reel 24. The wires 8, 10 may be subjected to heat for only a second and then may be quenched in a water spray 20. Curing of the insulating material 4 may be completed in the heater 18. A cable, Fig. 3 (not shown), having a core of seven stranded galvanized steel wires and a covering of two layers of stranded aluminium or copper wire may be made in which the core wires are stressrelieved.
