Abstract

1,012,210. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 7, 1963 [Nov. 6, 1962; Jan. 16, 1963], Nos. 39611/61, 42001/62 and 1969/63. Heading B3M. A rolling mill, having a housing structure to support a number of roll neck bearing assemblies, has portions of the housing structure of low bonding resistance such that relative movement of parts of the structure is possible in order to permit self alignment to at least one of the roll neck bearing assemblies. Between an upper housing portion 10, Fig. 10, supporting a roll 16 and a lower portion 11 supporting roll chocks 18 and a roll 17 are hinging devices, the portions 10 and 11 being prestressed together by bolts 12 surrounded by a clearance space. Each hinging device comprises rollers 102, one on each side of a prestressing bolt 12, held between recessed plates 103 and 104, and surrounded by a resilient insert 107, the hinging devices allowing flexure of the rolls under load and being retained in an assembled state by bolts 115. Pass adjustment is by screwoperated wedges 26 which raise the lower roll, axial adjustment of the lower roll also being possible by means of a screwed rod 125 acting through a lever system (Fig. 9, not shown). A link 102B may be removed to permit withdrawal of the rolls and the frame may be shifted on its support by means of hooks 97 and 98. Fig. 14 shows a mill where the hinging devices take the form of annular chambers which are supplied with a pressure fluid a flexible diaphragm allowing relative motion between the housing portions 10 and 11. A gauge 156 measures the rolling load, the hinging devices also being used for prestressing if desired. Fig. 2 shows the housing portion shaped at 31 and provided with hardened inserts 32 to form the hinging device, an extensometer 53 measuring the rolling load. The prestressing bolts 12 are hinged at 14. The housing, Fig. 8, is supported by diamond-shaped projections 55 of the housing portion 11 which are supported in cups 56 of supporting beams 60. The prestressing bolts in all cases may be surrounded by O-rings of elastic material which, when compressed, increase the resistance of the housing to bending. Specification 941,027 is referred to.
