Abstract

Colour couplers which contain an aromatic ring substituted by phenolic hydroxyl and, in a non-coupling position, by a ureido group are prepared by reacting an appropriate amino-phenol with an isocyanate. Specified compounds have the formula RNHCONHR1 wherein (1) R is 2-hydroxy-4-chlorophenyl and R1 is tetradecyl, 3-chlorophenyl, 2-phenylethyl, 1-naphthyl or H; (2) R is heptadecyl and R1 is 2 - hydroxyphenyl, 2 - hydroxy - 3 5 - dichlorophenyl, 2 - hydroxy - 5 - sulphophenyl, 2-hydroxy - 3 - phenylphenyl - 2 - hydroxy - 3-methoxyphenyl or 2 - hydroxy - 6 - chlorohexylureidophenyl; (3) R is tetradecyl and R1 is 2 - hydroxy - 4 - sulphamylphenyl, 2-hydroxy - 4 - tolyl or 1 - hydroxyl - 4 - sulpho-2-naphthyl; (4) R is ethyl and R1 is 3-hydroxy-5-amylphenyl; (5) R is 2-pyridyl and R1 is 2-hydroxy-4-aminophenyl; (6) R is cyclohexyl and R1 is 2-hydroxy-4-nitrophenyl. Others have the formula XNHCONH(CH2)6NHCONHX wherein X is 2-hydroxyphenyl or 2-hydroxy-4-sulphonyl-phenyl.
